our model for education

read how the education marketplace has resisted change and our plans to disrupt it

a shake-up of the higher education industry is long overdue

It’s time to reverse the trend of declining enrollment and increasing costs, through innovation and the creation of new opportunities for learning.

the marketplace

In recent years, a significant shift has occurred in the higher education marketplace. Where traditional brick and mortar institutions once dominated the market, the growth of new academic platforms has extended the reach of higher education far beyond the classroom and, in doing so, brought unprecedented learning into the digital space. It is now possible to engage in almost every type of learning imaginable, with just an online connection and a few clicks.

our plan for change

At the gap year project, we’re working to introduce a new model of learning to an industry that has been historically slow to evolve. Our model challenges the legacy of the traditional system and disrupts the narrative around academics, by leveraging both conventional and digital resources and pushing the industry to be more flexible and responsive to the needs of students.

  • This new model relies on support from entrenched two- and four-year institutions and encourages students to take a gap year, while permitting them to earn credit that is transferable and applicable to their college degree.

  • Whether the learning occurs in a classroom or is delivered through asynchronous online platforms, gap year classes that closely resemble typical college pre-requisites, including similar content and outcomes, would count for credit.

  • This is particularly relevant for students facing affordability issues, as online classes and classes at community and state colleges are a fraction of the cost of comparable classes elsewhere.

For students considering or already taking a gap year, there has never been a better time to remain engaged in learning before formally beginning college.
