Extensive research has shown that higher education leads to greater opportunity and the potential for upward mobility. Why, then, does the current system require students and families to over-extend with a burden of significant debt and spending, for the inherent right to learn and achieve success?

Despite recent efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education, the system has failed to address the underlying problem of affordability, resulting in a decline in enrollment as students postpone or forego college altogether.

We believe that gap years hold the key to overcoming this crisis and we’re working to minimize the affordability barriers, so students can follow a more flexible path to college and success.

At the gap year project, we’re working to introduce a new model of learning to an industry that has been historically slow to evolve. In fact, a shake-up of the higher education industry is long overdue. It’s time to reverse the trend of declining enrollment and increasing costs, by introducing true innovation and improved accessibility.

Our model of education challenges the legacy of the traditional system by leveraging both conventional and digital resources and pushing the industry to be more flexible and responsive to the needs of students. Our model further pushes the system to support and encourage gap years that include employment and the building of financial assets for college.
